This wine is produced by the descendants of the famous conservationist John Muir, so it’s appropriate that an earthy aroma of damp leaf litter and mushrooms predominates at first. On the palate, white pepper and other spices intermingle with wild strawberries, oak, fresh herbs and the merest suggestion of smoke. Instead of deepening, though, the wine lost its grip on all the richer elements, leaving behind battered petals steeped in perfume. Still, it’s a decent pinot for the price and would fare quite well as a meal accompaniment. (I drank it with mild cheeses and crackers). For pairing, I’d suggest a mushroom risotto for my fellow vegetarians or turkey, pheasant or duck for meat eaters.
